Mindfulness is trending right now and there are a ton of stories swirling about how to gain it. Practicing it and finding simple ways to incorporate it into one’s life is the trick – easier said than done. I’ve found a way to integrated ‘mindfulness’ into my life and it’s just a step outside, plus it will enhance your outdoor living spaces…
My secret is to put my mind and hands to work in the garden setting ideas into motion with the strike of a shovel. With my hands in the earth and dirt under my nails, I become one with my vision and lose myself in the possibilities of another spring of refinement in the garden. Blood, sweat and fears go into it, but the outcome is, well, something we can all share in and enjoy throughout the BEST months in the Northwest.
My twist on it: Northwest Zen. So what the hell does that mean? A blending of the color and simplicity of traditional Japanese gardens with a hint of Northwest natural, plus some personal touches that make it pop. Whether it’s a centerpiece Trumpet Tree, a sprawling Katsura or an elegantly delicate Japanese Maple, it all comes together in layers of lush color and texture. Mindfulness achieved…
Enjoy a look into the humble, but enlightening spaces I’ve revitalized in my apprenticeship to become a Master Gardener (or so I hope). Get out and get your hands dirty, mindfulness awaits…
Ideate | Plan | Strike Dirt
I’ve said it before and I will say it over and over and over… Start simple, ideate, plan, and then strike the dirt. You’ll have some successes, some failures (I’ve had many), but keep at it and build your vision. The outcome a landscape that brings new sight-lines and splendor. It all comes together with a little vision and effort.
My process: 1) Sketch-ups on paper or digital, 2) Discussion with my wife (ultimate veto power), 3) Then get at it and get dirty.

Take a moment to enjoy the ‘friends’ you’ll find along the way…
Don’t forget to share your love of gardening and a few leftovers…
